A researcher from Quebec says there may be some scientific basis to support traditional Cree cures for diabetes.

Dr. Pierre Haddad of the University of Montreal has spent much of the year studying the effects of Cree medicine on the disease.

He explains that while none of the plants or treatments used by the Quebec Cree actually improved the amount of insulin produced by the body, some of them helped improve the effectiveness of the insulin the body created.

Some of the vegetation found to help sufferers of the disease included inner bark from the Balsam Fir and Tamarack trees, and pinecones from Black Spruce and Jack Pine.

He adds his research has already been published and more is on the way.
