Courts Give OK To Residential School Compensation

Canada’s courts have approved the federal government’s compensation package for residential school survivors.
All nine judges involved in the decision unanimously agreed to terms of the settlement.
That means cheques of $10,000 each — plus $3,000 for each additional year spent in the institutions — will go out next year.
Saskatchewan lawyer Tony Merchant says he expects survivors to receive the payments by September or October.
He adds there will now be a brief waiting period where school survivors can choose to opt out of the settlement package if they wish.
Merchant doubts any of them will.
