AFN And FSIN Applaud Compensation Ruling

The Chief of the Assembly of First Nations says he’s pleased Canada’s courts have chosen to ratify the compensation deal for residential school survivors.

Phil Fontaine says band members have waited far too long for a deal and it’s nice to see the court certification process has passed.

He says survivors are dying off at a rate of 4 per day and this process needs to move faster.

Meantime, a Vice-Chief with the FSIN says he’s happy to see signs pointing towards the creation of a truth and reconciliation process.

Lyle Whitefish says giving survivors the chance to tell their stories could help the healing process.

He adds he won’t be fully satisfied until former students actually receive their cheques.
