Northern Alberta Band Sues Feds

The failure of the Federal Government to provide bullets and fishing twine to some northern bands 100 years ago can’t be measured in today’s economy, according to a lawyer.
Chris Devlin says that’s why 14 First Nations within the Treaty 8 area have filed specific claims over Ottawa’s failure to live up to provisions in the historical document.
Devlin says many band members lost the chance to make a good living due to the shortfall by Ottawa and that’s why compensation is required.
Devlin says the specific claim was filed a few years ago, but he’s still not sure how long it will take to settle.
Treaty 8 was originally struck back in 1899.
