New Document To Help With Band Consultations

A new document on what mining companies should do when developing on Aboriginal land has been created.
The draft-framework is the brainchild of the Mining Association of Canada, and intended to streamline relations between industry and the Aboriginal communities, whose land is being developed.
Vice-President Pierre Gratton says the hope is that if careful negotiations and acknowledgement of treaty rights are followed today, troubles down the road can be avoided.
He notes the courts have made it clear, governments have a duty to consult Aboriginal communities about development.
He says industry is attempting to solve the problem before any major disputes occur.
