It’s the time of year when home owners are a little careless when it comes to fire safety.

That’s the reason why the La Ronge Fire Department is reminding northerners to use extra caution while cooking and when using a real Christmas tree.

Deputy Fire Chief Steve Debienne says residents need to be cautious and alert when cooking through the holidays.

Debienne says if you’re using a real Christmas tree, it must be well watered because it can dry out completely in less than 10 days, causing an extreme fire hazard in your home.

He says a large tree can require up to 4 liters of water per day, so its important homeowners check their trees frequently.
