The provincial critic for First Nations and Metis Relations is giving the Saskatchewan Government a failing grade over the way it’s handled a recent directive of the Supreme Court.

June Draude says the NDP has dropped the ball when it comes to addressing new rules on how governments should consult First Nations whose land is being developed.

For much of the past few months, a number of wide ranging views have circulated on the duty to consult topic, and just what it means for the future of relations between industry, government and Indian bands.

Draude says the implications are vast and more attention needs to be given to the issue. She adds the issue doesn’t have to be a negative one.

All that’s required is for the government to take more time to consult bands about development near their traditional land and also be prepared to accommodate their requests.

Draude says she’s aware of at least one claim before the courts about a lack of consultation.

She says a Saskatchewan Party government already has established a stricter policy over the issue and would do its best to see that there aren’t anymore.
