A new cannabis dispensary will hold a grand opening in Regina next Friday, as the Zagimē Anishinabēk Nation, formally the Sakimay First Nation will embark on a medical dispensary.
The third dispensary for a Saskatchewan First Nation came following a June referendum, where members were asked “for consent and instructions on developing laws which would regulate activities involving the cannabis and hemp industries on reserve lands.”
84.6 percent of ballots supported the referendum, allowing Chief and Council to pass the Zagimē Anishinabēk Cannabis and Hemp Act.
“We had never written a sovereign law before, a hybrid law that’s based on our inherent right to self-determination. But, also based on the western concept of legislative law that is passed by a governing body,” said Chief Lynn Acoose.
The referendum also created the Zagimē Cannabis Board, an independent body that oversees the entire dispensary operations.
The board of eight individuals who are not associated with Zagimē Anishinabēk government or business entities.
The grand opening of the Omagakii Medical Dispensary will be held October 25 at 4PM.
The store is located in the Saulteaux Crossing development area within Zagimē Anishinabēk reserve lands.
The business will operate at 1500 Pinkie Road located near the intersection of Pinky Road and Dewdney Avenue will be held October 25 at 4PM.
