The La Ronge 89ers midget hockey team is preparing for provincials.
The 89ers, who are competing in the midget B division, kick off a two-game total-point series against the Unity Lazers on the road this Sunday.
Tom Carlson is the head coach of the Ronge 89ers and he says they are a skilled team.
“We have to probably use what we have — skill-wise and our speed, we’ve got some boys that can skate pretty fast,” said Carlson. “So, that’s what we’ll have to start off with and then feel them out, and see what kind of team they are.”
Carlson says they have a strong contingent of players from Stanley Mission on the club this season.
“Well, they are from the three communities — Air Ronge, La Ronge and Stanley Mission,” said Carlson. “I have eight boys from Stanley (Mission) that play on my team. We practice in La Ronge at the JRMCC and we have one practice in Stanley every week.”
The puck is scheduled to drop at 3 p.m. Sunday in Unity.
Game two goes Feb. 15 at the JRMCC on the Lac La Ronge Indian Band.
