The current chief and council of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band will remain in office a little longer than was initially expected.
The First Nation was in the middle of an election campaign this month when the province was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic about two weeks ago.
The election tribunal made the decision earlier in the week to postpone Monday’s vote for safety reasons.
On Thursday afternoon, a press release was sent out saying Chief Tammy Cook and council’s term has been extended until Apr. 30 because of the emergency situation.
The release also says chief and council will not be authorized to make any expenditures during this time.
A new election date has not yet been set.
The First Nation amended its election act in 2019 to include an election tribunal.
