The Canoe Lake Cree Nation is mourning the passing of long-serving former chief Guy Lariviere.
Lariviere was first elected chief of the First Nation in 1992 and re-elected eight times
Canoe Lake Councillor Wilfred Iron said Lariviere had a big impact on the First Nation.
“It’s a tragic loss for the community,” he said. “He was a former chief and former FSIN (Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations) senator. He sat in council for two terms in 1988 to 1992 and he was a chief for eight terms.”
The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations also issued a press release offering condolences.
