La Ronge’s Parker Layton has signed with the Warman Wildcats, which is a U18 AAA program.
The 2003-born defenceman is heading into his third season in the AAA ranks after spending two campaigns with the Beardy’s Blackhawks.
Layton and other players on his club were left without a team following restructuring in the league that saw Beardy’s lose its franchise. Despite the change, Layton is looking forward to the new opportunity in Warman.
“It’s close to family, my sister lives in Saskatoon, going to university, so it was a pretty easy decision on that route,” said Layton. “It will be exciting to be apart of a team where it’s their first year, first team as a franchise. Going into a new town, new place, living in Warman, it’s going to be a new opportunity, so it’s going to be quite exciting.”
Layton had 10 points in 44 games this past season with the Beardy’s Blackhawks. He says he wants to be a leader on his new team.
“Being a third-year guy, there’s going to be some pressure on my shoulders to produce,” said Layton. “I just want to take them under my wing and show them what I’ve been through — and just help them become better hockey players.”
Cobe Delaney, who is also from La Ronge, will also be playing for the Wildcats this upcoming season as well.
