The La Ronge Ice Wolves hosted a three-day training camp over the weekend and the spirit amongst people in attendance was tremendously high at the Mel Hegland Uniplex and the JRMCC.
“Well, it was exciting actually to get back in the rink and see the boys compete again,” said Ice Wolves Head Coach and GM Kevin Kaminksi.
The last time the Ice Wolves gathered for a game in La Ronge was March 11 when they beat the Yorkton Terriers 5-1 and tied their best-of-seven first-round series at two games apiece. A few days later, the playoffs were axed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Ice Wolves are now taking part in an extended training camp until they know when the regular season can begin.
“First couple days were a bit rusty for some of the boys, but by game four here (of training camp), we’re all moving pretty good and this is back to the Ice Wolves’ hockey that we all know,” said La Ronge forward Spencer Kennedy.
The SJHL is targeting Oct. 9 as the start for the 2020-21 campaign, but approval will be needed from the proper authorities first.
Meantime, the Manitoba Junior Hockey League is starting its season Oct. 9 and pre-season contests are already underway in that province.
