A Buffalo Narrows man charged in connection to a 2018 murder made his first court appearance in Meadow Lake Provincial Court Jan. 13 on a second-degree murder charge.
Robert Young, 67, was arrested without incident on Jan. 12, 2021, after a two-year investigation into the murder of Jason Chartier, 42. RCMP didn’t release Chartier’s name in 2018.
Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit North (MCU-N), with the assistance of several RCMP detachments and specialized units worked together to investigate Chartier’s death. Police say they interviewed witnesses to establish a clear timeline of events, examined the scene, gathered evidence and worked with the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service to investigate the circumstances of Chartier’s death.
Based on the information gathered, along with investigational assistance from the Buffalo Narrows RCMP, North Battleford and Regina RCMP Forensic Identification Services (FIS), RCMP MCU-South, the death was determined to be a homicide.
In a Jan. 13, 2021, media release, RCMP said the victim was identified as Chartier and that Saskatchewan RCMP Victim Services is providing his family the support they need.
According to Buffalo Narrows RCMP, they received a call around 1 p.m. on Dec. 20, 2018, about an injured and unconscious man in a shed behind a residence in Buffalo Narrows. After police arrived, EMS declared the man deceased.
Young was remanded in custody. He is now scheduled to appear in Meadow Lake Provincial Court by CCTV on Feb. 17 to elect how he wants to be tried.
