Funeral services will take place Tuesday for an Ochapowace First Nation elder who passed away Thursday. Senator Wesley Bear was 75.
“The community of Ochapowace First Nation is better today because of the years of dedicated service and leadership Senator Wesley Bear brought to the nation” said FSIN Vice Chief Heather Bear. “He was a great leader who was kind and compassionate, and he was loved by many.”
According to the First Nation, Bear served on Band Council for 12 years and on the South East Treaty Four Tribal Council. He was also the chairperson of the Ochapowace Kehtey-ak and the Kikisiwew Family Representatives.
He was respected for his guidance and mentorship in the traditional way of life and teachings. “Senator Bear served his people for more than two decades and we are all very thankful for the time we spent working with him,” explained FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron.
Wake services are taking place today on the First Nation, with the funeral tomorrow. COVID-19 protocols are in place.
