Prince Albert’s popular Heart of the Youth Powwow is moving to an online format this year.
The annual event, which was cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be held on Friday, May 28.
Powwow organizer Liz Settee said they are happy to once again be able to offer what has become an important event in the city for reconciliation.
“It strikes up conversations,” she said. “People want to know why things are done in a certain way. It opens up the door for learning.”
She added the organizing committee is also pleased the city has agreed to a request to officially designate the last Friday of each May as “Community Powwow Day.”
“I always go in asking for a lot and I figure if I don’t get it, it’s okay. But this is huge for the city, it’s huge for truth and reconciliation. The youth can actually feel like they’re part of something now. It’s something to look forward to every year.”
Settee said the event, which started in 2018, has been growing every year and attracted as many as 3,500 people in 2019.
The Heart of the Youth Powwow is usually held in Kinsmen Park.
