Prince Albert Police allege that RCMP officer Bernie Herman confessed to a co-worker that he killed someone.
“On Tuesday, May 11th, Bernie Herman, a long-serving member of the RCMP phoned a co-worker and made disturbing comments that he had killed someone. The accused agreed to come to his co-worker’s house located just north of Prince Albert,” said Prince Albert Police. “The accused provided information as to where police could locate the victim of this homicide. RCMP members attended to the area and located 26-year-old Braden Herman, who was deceased and appeared to have been shot.”
The veteran Mountie is charged with murder in the death of 26-year-old Braden Herman of the Clearwater River Dene Nation.
Police said the rural scene was located near Little Red Park, but can not confirm the weapon used in the homicide.
(P.A. Police are currently in possession of an RCMP vehicle as part of the investigation, but said they don’t believe it has anything to do directly with the crime)
Police have seized Bernie Herman’s service pistol and other use-of-force equipment for part of the investigation.
“He was not on duty at the time of the offence; however, the investigation has determined that upon completing his shift at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11, the accused left work in full uniform wearing his duty belt,” explained police.
Authorities allege that the victim and the suspect are of no relation, but have known each other for several years.
Bernie Herman will appear in court May 26.
