Workers at Cameco’s Cigar Lake mine are returning to the site, after a wildfire last week forced the evacuation of 230 non-essential personnel.

The uranium producer said it plans to restart production later this week.

After consultations with wildfire officials, Cameco’s said it believed the risk to the mine posed by the fire has now subsided.

“With improved weather and smoke conditions, minimal likelihood of further road closures in the area, and all infrastructure at Cigar Lake remaining intact, Cameco believes the full complement of personnel can be safely remobilized and regular operations resumed,” read a statement from Cameco.
