As Cameco continues to deal with COVID-19 infections at its northern Cigar Lake mine it is considering a workplace vaccination policy.
“We continue to review and consider all relevant perspectives on pandemic safety and vaccination policies, including employment laws, labour/union laws, privacy legislation, human rights, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and ethical considerations to determine what avenues are available to us to increase vaccination rates,” said Government Relations and Communications Director Jeff Hryhoriw.
On Wednesday Cameco reported that four workers are in isolation, with three positive tests. Site-wide testing of employees and contractors was conducted yesterday.
This follows an outbreak in May, where nine employees tested positive, but eight were asymptomatic.
“Our goal is to have and maintain a minimum of 90 percent of our workers fully vaccinated for COVID-19 at each of our facilities, offices and operations,” Hryhoriw explained. “We are now in the process of collecting vaccination information from all of our workers, both employees and contractors at our Canadian locations, which will help to shape our workplace protocols going forward.”
