The chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations is apologizing to a Lac La Ronge Indian Band community for something he said at a meeting of business leaders in Saskatoon last month.
In a speech to the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce, Lawrence Joseph says he mistakenly mentioned Stanley Mission had a problem with gangs.
Joseph says he had been told about a gang problem in another northern community just prior to the meeting, and got the names mixed up while trying to make a point about social conditions on reserves.
He says he is sorry for the mistake, and adds it’s not his practice to slander any community.
Joseph says he will formally apologize to leaders of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band at a band council meeting next week.
