Two people and a 4-year-old child are safe and sound after spending a night in the wilderness near Black Lake.
RCMP say the three individuals ventured out on a side-by-side last Friday afternoon when they got stuck in the muskeg.
The group was able to make brief phone contact before losing service to inform a friend of their situation. This call urged friends, family, and the RCMP to begin a search.
The search went late into the evening, but RCMP say the search was called off for the night because it became too dangerous.
The following morning the group was able to make contact again with their cell phone.
RCMP officers and a local conservation officer then ventured out on an ATV to locate the group and bring them home.
RCMP say the man, woman and child were able to build a fire overnight and took shelter in their side-by-side from the cool September night.
“It was very lucky that they were able to find a cell signal and let family know they were stuck. That’s not always the case in the far north,” said RCMP Cst. Sean Carlson. “If anyone is heading out on off-road vehicles, or hunting or trapping in remote areas, they can always contact the detachment and provide travel plans and planned return time, just in case.”
In this incident, Everybody returned home safe and sound with no injuries to report.
