Rogue Outfitters Becoming Concern

A rise in the number of out-of-province hunters providing “covert” outfitting services has caught the attention of a leader in the industry.

Hal Stupenikoff, the executive director of the Saskatchewan Outfitters Association, says too many hunters from abroad are taking advantage of the province’s rules.

He says it used to be that hunters from other provinces could only hunt during select periods of the season.

However, Stupenikoff says changes have given them season-round access.

He advocates the implementation of a draw system or a shorter season to weed out the ones setting up illegal operations.

Stupenikoff also says measures could be put in place to ensure innocent hunters aren’t penalized.

He adds the provincial government should also look at adopting rules similar to Alberta’s that require out-of-province hunters to use local outfitters.
