Regina residents have launched an ethics complaint against a City Councillor for comments made toward Indigenous People.
The complaint has the backing of 47 residents and is seeking to have Terina Shaw removed from Council.
The Regina Leader-Post reports that the complaint to Integrity Commissioner Angela Kruk states that Shaw made comments during two council meetings in January and June. Shaw is accused of implying that Indigenous men are sexual predators and that some Indigenous People prefer to be homeless.
The two complainants, believe that Shaw’s comments have violated the Code of Ethics bylaw, which pertains to derogatory use of language while on Council.
The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nation raised concern last month to Shaw’s homelessness comments, suggesting it was racist and unneeded. The FSIN also called for greater education.
While Shaw refused to apologize, Mayor Sandra Masters did. The complaint said that Shaw’s remarks are stereotyping Indigenous People. The investigation into the complaint could take up to 90 days and could provide recommendations against Shaw.
