Employers Get Tips On Recruiting Native Workers

Potential employers from across the province are congregating in Saskatoon over the next couple of days to find out how they can tap into the Aboriginal workforce.

They are meeting at a forum put on by the Aboriginal Human Resource Council, an organization that has hosted these events across the country.

This is the first one ever to be held in Saskatchewan, and it has attracted the most employers at any so far — 110.

The forum connects would-be employers with Aboriginal Human Resource practitioners to link them to potential employees.

Council president and CEO Kelly Lendsay says the growing Aboriginal population — coupled with high levels of unemployment — make that group ideal for employers who are facing a labour shortage.

Lendsay says retention is very important, because his organization wants to know that all the work done to help employers recruit Aboriginal people has paid off.

The forum has drawn employers from the mining, transportation, government, and environmental sectors.
