Dawn Walker has been released on bail.
Walker, who faces charges after allegedly faking her death and fleeing to the United States, had a bail hearing Friday afternoon.
Crown prosecutor Tyla Olenchuk and defense lawyers Chris Murphy spent the afternoon presenting evidence and arguments on why Walker should or shouldn’t be released from custody while her matters are before the courts.
At the conclusion of the bail hearing, Justice Lua Gibb decided to release Dawn Walker on several conditions.
These conditions include $10,000 in bail, Walker must stay in residence with her sister, andhas a 24 hour curfew that is electronically monitored. She can receive permitted time to leave the home.
Walker is also not able to leave Saskatchewan, must hand over all travel documents to the Saskatoon Police Service, and can not be in possession of any identification document that is not hers.
During her decision Judge Lua Gibb indicated the Crown did not meet cause that Walker’s detention was necessary and the conditions address any concerns brought forward by the Crown.
Justice Gibb also spoke about systemic racism in the justice system especially for accused Indigenous women who should be presumed innocence.
Walker will be back in court on September 19 at 9:30am.
