Lieutenant Governor Russ Mirasty visited schools in the North to present some students with the Lieutenant Governor’s Award of Excellence.

Mirasty visited five schools to present the Lieutenant Governor’s Award of Excellence.

While on his tour he visited Twin Lakes School in Buffalo Narrows, Clearwater River Dene Highschool in La Loche, Creighton Community School in Creighton, Ministik Community School in Cumberland house and finally Churchill Community High School in La Ronge.

Mirasty spoke to MBC about the tour he was taking part in and the events return after two years due to the Pandemic.

“Well, it’s an annual event or it’s supposed to be, but we’re obviously two years behind because of the pandemic.” Said Mirasty. “But it’s a wonderful opportunity for me as Lieutenant Governor to travel to different schools in the north to recognize students for their academic achievements and how they are involved within their school and how they support other students, it’s really a special tour that we do.”

The Lieutenant Governor’s Award of Excellence recognizes one student at each grade level from grades 7 to 12. Mirasty explained that the criteria to receive these awards are academic standing, school attendance.

“It’s really based on two aspects, it’s their attendance and their academic achievement but also if they’ve done other volunteer kinds of activities, where they support students or are involved in school activities, sports, the arts and some other personal interest kind of activities, so all combined it makes them eligible for this award, they’re recognized at the school level, nominated and brought forward to receive the award,” said Mirasty.

He also explained how the Northern Student Academic Achievement awards have been going on for multiple years involving multiple Lieutenant Governors.

“It’s been quite a number of years, I know that several Lieutenant Governors have traveled the north presenting the Lieutenant Governor’s Academic Achievement Award and so were just carrying on with that legacy of recognizing students and making sure they are recognized and that they are proud of what they have done within their schools, academically and socially as well,” explained Mirasty.

Mirasty, a former student of the Churchill Community High School in La Ronge, explained how it felt to him to be able to come back and deliver these awards.

“Oh, it feels great, I mean one to come home and actually be in part of the school because it’s changed significantly since I came to school here in Churchill, but it feels really good to recognize local people in the school that I attended for sure,” Mirasty explained.

The Lieutenant Governor concluded his tour Wednesday after visiting La Ronge’s Churchill Community Highschool.
