Martin Anticipating Kelowna Accord “Becoming Law”

A high-profile Liberal MP says he doesn’t know how the Stephen Harper government will continue to ignore the Kelowna Accord once a private member’s bill calling for its implementation is passed through Parliament.

Former Prime Minister Paul Martin’s bill is at third reading, with a very real possibility of passing.

Martin says the Tories will essentially be cherry-picking Canadian laws if they refuse to honour the agreement.

Once it becomes the law of the land, Martin wonders how the Conservative government will be able to ask Canadians to obey the law if they are not prepared to do so.

The Tories are opposed to the $5 billion plan, but Martin says it’s worth noting his bill is supported by Canada’s premiers, Aboriginal leaders and all Opposition parties.
