The Muskowekwan First Nation has opened it new Family Healing and Wellness Centre.
The centre will help to address “ the historical systemic and long-term traumatic effects as a direct result of the residential schooling system and the Sixties Scoop in Canada.”
Services will include a focus on cultural and traditional supports and programs, including land-based programming.
“This facility is unique in that it will encompass family treatment that is rooted in the land-based and traditional Anishinaabe teachings while recognizing the western medicine role in today’s world. We have walked many roads of colonization,” said Chief Jamie Wolfe. “We have the last residential school in Saskatchewan still standing in our community which will remind future generations as to what happened to our people and why we need these centres to help heal.”
This is just the first phase of a full site concept which today includes four log homes, three family dwellings and one program delivery unit. The plan is to eventually have up to ten buildings on site to grow and support more First Nations families in the region and across the province.
