A director with Saskatchewan Justice is confirming reports the Crown won’t pursue a third trial against a man accused of sexual assault.

32-year-old Jeffrey Brown was charged in 2001 with the sexual assault of a 12 year-old Cree girl near Tisdale.

One man was found guilty of the crime, while Brown and another man were acquitted.

However, the Crown appealed the decision and another trial for Brown took place this spring.

This time, the jury was unable to come to a decision.

Government spokesperson Laur’Lei Silzer says they’ve decided to drop the matter due to the unlikelihood of a conviction.

Silzer adds it’s very rare for a third trial to ever take place, especially when two previous attempts have proven unsuccessful.

She also stresses the victim was contacted before the decision was made public.
