The provincial governments of the three prairie provinces and the federal government have wrapped up engagement with First Nations on growing First Nation participation in agriculture.

In a media release sent out Tuesday it was announced that Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta and the Government of Canada had released a report which was produced after engagement with First Nations. The report found some First Nations are interested in growing their food systems through more traditional practices while also being interested in becoming more involved in the agriculture sector. The information collected from the report is set to be used to inform department policies and programs going forward.

Saskatchewan’s minister of agriculture said his government was happy to work in collaborative way with other governments and added they are proud to be a part of it.

“The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to support First Nations engagement in the agricultural sector to develop economic, social and cultural opportunities that will help us move forward together,” said David Marit.

The federal government and the governments of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba have been involved in the study since 2021.

The project was supported by the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, which is $3 billion program that aims to support the country’s agriculture sector.
