The search for coal is coming to northern Saskatchewan.

Silver Fields resources has applied for permits near Wapawekka Lake and southeast of Lac La Ronge.

The company says outcrops of coal have been reported at Hart Point, Wapaw Bay and the Bow River.

Silver Fields CEO Chris England says he believes coal could someday bring as much wealth to northern Saskatchewan as uranium.

England says demand for thermal coal is growing in the world, and he believes the north could possess high-grade deposits.

England notes his company is just one of about 50 or 60 who have been applying for coal permits in the province, and the government is scrambling to catch up to the recent coal rush.

He says it will likely be three or four months before any permits are actually handed out.
