About 300 people have been evacuated from the Fond-Du-Lac Denesuline First Nation.
In a media release sent out Wednesday the First Nation said the members who were evacuated are considered to be at risk of health complications due to wildfire smoke.
Fond-Du-Lac Chief Kevin Mercredi said the First Nation worked with a number of partners to move at risk membership out of the community.
“This team effort makes sure our people’s health and safety are our top priority,” he said.
The First Nation’s emergency operations centre has also been set up and is working with the Athabasca Health Authority (AHA), Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority (NITHA), Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC), Saskatchewan First Nations Emergency Management (SFNEM), Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) along with the Canadian Red Cross and Indigenous Services Canada (ISC).
Chief Mercredi said the evacuated members will be returning to the community when it is safe. He added the First Nations is thankful for all the help they have received.
“Our people’s safety will always be our main concern and we will make sure everything is safe before we begin this process,” he said.
