The Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police have announced the waiving of certain fees for people who are working to reclaim their traditional names.
In a media release sent out Wednesday, the association said people who are looking to get criminal record checks along with finger printing will no longer be charged a fee.
The association said the decision to wave fees was made in response to the Truth and Reconciliation (TRC) Calls to Action recommendation number 17. The recommendation calls on all levels of government to wave fees to help residential school survivors and their families regain their names.
The association said they are committed to working with policing agencies and Indigenous people in the province to move towards reconciliation.
