The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency announced the openings of multiple seasonal positions for Type one Firefighters and other wildfire roles. The SPSA is hiring approximately 45 to 60 positions in multiple northern locations.
Applicants must have a valid class five driver’s license and complete health and safety evaluations. Some of the job locations include La Ronge, Stoney Rapids, La Loche, Buffalo Narrows and more.
“They need to be team orientated, pretty decent physical shape because it’s a pretty labor-intensive position, need to like the outdoors,” said Executive Director of Land Operations at SPSA Bryan Chartrand.
Last year Saskatchewan saw one of the worst wildfire seasons in the province to date, with the total amount of land burned adding up to five times the size of the Prince Albert National Park. Chartrand say’s the lack of snow so far this winter isn’t great but he’s hopeful that we’ll see more snow and rain before the wildfire season kicks off.
“They go into our new hire training and that goes right from training on how to use our equipment such as the various pumps, how to maintain and distribute the hose, how to use and maintain hand tools, we go through the fire trucks, various safety courses, chainsaw training, there’s a vast variety of training available to them,” said Chartrand.
