Nine inmates are facing charges following a fight at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary, which left one inmate dead and another seriously injured.
George Custer, Tyrel Munroe, Dominick Cochrane, Jonathan Soosay, Wyatt Crookedneck, and Rene Merasty are each charged with one count of second degree murder, in the death of Rocky Meechance.
Investigators said an altercation between a group of inmates broke out at the facility in Prince Albert Monday night at approximately 10 PM.
Meechance had been serving a sentence of two years, 11 months, and 18 days, and was convicted of breaking and entering to commit an offense, accessory after the fact, flight from police, obstructing a peace officer, and operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited.
A second inmate was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Conrad Merasty, Ilyas Gilao, and DJ Montgrand have each been charged with one count of attempted murder, and one count of aggravated assault. Court dates for all suspects are pending.
