The Saskatchewan RCMP are reporting a number of arrests and charges after stepped up enforcement in Pelican Narrows.
RCMP said from March 8 to 11 local officers were assisted by members of the La Ronge Crime Reduction Team and Police Dog Services who helped arrest five people and seize five illegal firearms along with cocaine, meth, ammunition and cash.
March 8
Police said they were called about gunshots being fired by a group of people outside who then fled the area. As one of the suspects was fleeing he was seen throwing something away. The item was eventually found and was determined to be a restricted firearm. The man was eventually taken into custody and found to be in possession of ammunition. 20-year-old Corbin Custer of Pelican Narrows is charged with careless use of a firearm, being in possession of a restricted firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
March 8-9
Police were called about gunshots being fired inside a home. RCMP said once they arrived they seized two restricted firearms. As a result of this incident 28-year-old Kelly Ballantyne of Pelican Narrows has been charged with weapons trafficking, unsafe storage of a firearm along with illegally being in possession of firearms.
March 9
RCMP were checking on a person who was released on conditions at a home when they found ammunition, 20 grams of meth, 12 grams of cocaine, and cash. As a result 24-year-old Sunshine Ballantyne of Pelican Narrows is charged with a range of offenses including possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, weapons possession and failing to comply with a release order among other charges.
March 10
Police were contacted about two people chasing and shooting a gun at a man on a street in Pelican Narrows. When police arrived the two suspects fled. While being pursued the suspects threw the gun behind a home, which was later recovered. Eventually police arrested 23-year-old Drea McCallum of Pelican Narrows who is charged with assault with a weapon and various other weapons related offenses. RCMP also arrested a youth in relation to the incident who can’t be named due to their age.
Also on March 10 while searching a home for a wanted person police found a stolen gun and laid charges against another youth.
All suspects have been remanded into custody.
