SRC Admits Failure To Consult Metis Over Mine Work

The Saskatchewan Research Council is pledging to do a better job of consulting Metis citizens on a decommissioning job in the province’s far north.
The SRC has been assigned the task of cleaning up the site of the Gunnar uranium mine.
Vice-president Joe Muldoon says the Metis Nation – Saskatchewan recently filed an intervention with the country’s nuclear safety regulator.
In it, the MN-S said it had concerns about radiological waste being exposed to the environment during removal — and that it wasn’t consulted at all about the project.
Muldoon says the SRC will try to do a better job of keeping Aboriginal groups informed.
He adds public consultations will be a major part of the environmental assessment process once it begins.
