A Meadow Lake man was sentenced in Battleford Court of Queen’s Bench today for assaulting a referee with a hockey stick during a tournament on a northern Saskatchewan reserve last year.
Nolan Ross Crighton was sentenced to the one year he has served in remand.
Crighton has also been given a 10-year firearms prohibition, and is required to submit a DNA sample.
As well, he must pay a $200 victim surcharge within 60 days.
The assault took place place during a hockey tournament on the Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation in February 2007.
The referee required hospitalization in Saskatoon.
Crown counsel Lloyd Stang is satisfied with the sentence, noting Crighton has “stayed out of trouble” over the last seven months.
Defence lawyer Daryl Labach is also pleased with the verdict.
