Battlefords Hosts Duty To Consult Gathering

Treaty Six and Treaty Four First Nations chiefs attending a duty to consult summit in North Battleford are studying a draft paper on the issue today.
According to former Red Pheasant Chief Gerald Wuttunee, the provincial government and lawyers working for First Nations are focusing too narrowly.
He says all of Treaty Six and Treaty Four land should be addressed — not just ancestral burial grounds and “ancient rabbit trails”.
He also says industry needs to negotiate with First Nations to come onto their lands, not just apply to the government for permits.
The two-day meeting is scheduled to end today.
