Joseph Issues Duty To Consult Warning To Chiefs

Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Chief Lawrence Joseph believes when First Nations negotiate with the province, chiefs have to make sure they don’t get caught in a trap.
Joseph spoke during a duty to consult summit in North Battleford yesterday.
He says the province talks about “sharing the wealth”, but he says First Nations want a share of oil, gas, and other resource revenues — not a vague term like “wealth.”
Joseph says revenue-sharing is not a new concept, noting Ontario has had it for awhile.
He also says that province calls it revenue-sharing — so he argues the Saskatchewan government “shouldn’t be scared of the languague”.
The two-day summit attracted Treaty 6 and Treaty 4 chiefs from across the province.
