A former high-ranking official at the Metis Nation – Saskatchewan has been sentenced to a year in jail for his part in the controversial 2004 MN-S election.
Former MN-S provincial secretary Ralph Kennedy had pleaded guilty to a charge of fraud in a North Battleford courtroom earlier today.
Both the Crown and defence had asked for a one-year jail sentence.
Kennedy told the court he is only guilty of interfering with a ballot box from a polling station in Hamlin, and not a wider conspiracy that the Crown had previously alleged.
Kennedy also said the illegal activity took place at a house party in Saskatoon after he unsuccessfully tried to take the ballot box from Hamlin to the MN-S headquarters.
