Regina Hosts First Nations Awards Gala

A war veteran won the lifetime achievement award at the 14th annual First Nations Awards in Regina last night.

The honour was given to Howard Anderson of the Gordon First Nation.

Thirteen other achievers in the First Nations community received awards.

They include Piapot’s Lorne Carrier, who won in the community work and involvement category.

Red Pheasant Chief Sheldon Wuttunee was honoured for his social work.

William Thomson of Carry The Kettle won the veterans award, while Jenna Tanner of Cowessess was the winner in the youth category.

Northern Saskatchewan was well-represented at the podium. Dr. Glenda Orr of Flying Dust won in the health and medicine category, hockey player Jon Mirasty took home the sports and recreation award, Peter Ballantyne’s Horace Ratt was the justice award winner and Buffalo River’s Roderick Billette took home the individual business award.

Other winners from last night include Ochapowace’s Tracy George-Heese for her work in education, Michelle Hugli of Yellow Quill in the journalism category, Muskoday’s Lindsay Knight for arts and entertainment, Don Pratt of the Muscowpetung First Nation in science and technology, and First Nations Insurance Services in the company business category.
