Former MACSI Directors Facing Fraud Charges

The president of the Metis Nation – Saskatchewan says events leading to the recent fraud charges laid against former directors of the Metis Addictions Council of Saskatchewan have brought about positive change.

 

The RCMP has charged Albert Delaire and Henry Cummings with fraud that allegedly took place between May 2001 and February 2004 while both were directors of MACSI.

 

Delaire is facing 11 counts of fraud over $5,000, two counts of fraud of less than $5,000 and one count of forgery.

 

Cummings is facing six counts of fraud over $5,000.

 

Cummings was previously charged with fraud in relation to the controversial 2004 MN-S election, but was eventually acquitted of that charge.

 

MN-S President Robert Doucette says, four years ago, MACSI was in a state of crisis — which led to a forensic audit and documents being turned over to the RCMP.

 

He says since that year, the MACSI board has changed for the better.

 

Doucette also says clients have always been properly served.

 

The current MACSI board is an interim one until the MN-S and Saskatchewan Health choose six, non-political people to sit on the board from applications sent in.

 

Doucette isn’t sure what kind of qualifications either Cummings or Delaire had, but says they were appointed by a past president when both were MN-S area directors.

 

Both suspects will appear in Saskatoon provincial court in December.
