After three years of negotiations, dentist services will soon be available in northwest Saskatchewan.

As the result of a pilot program involving the Keewatin Yatthe Regional Health Authority and the Meadow Lake Tribal Council, dentist services will begin being offered in Ile-a-la-Crosse in December and in La Loche in the New Year.

Dentists will be provided through the University of Manitoba’s Centre for Community Oral Health.

KYRHA spokesperson Elaine Malbeuf says the program will consist of five or six two-week visits a year, although the first visit to Ile-a-la-Crosse will be three weeks in duration.

The initiative is designed to be self-sustaining, with some dentist travel support from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health.
