Province Probing Feasibility Of Northern Drug Unit

Public Safety Minister Darryl Hickie says he’s working hard to establish a drug unit for northern Saskatchewan.
Hickie says the unit would be a mix of RCMP and municipal forces with the ability to travel into communities and make arrests.
He says it would need to operate with the help of mayors and chiefs who could call the unit when they encounter problems.
Hickie says the province has made inroads in arresting high-level drug pushers.
And he hopes to bring that heat to the lower-level pushers, as well.
Hickie says, at this stage, the government is just looking to see whether it has the capacity to make the move.
He notes a decision will be made within the next few weeks.
Hickie adds this type of drug squad has already proved successful in other regions of the country.
