Several new SaskEnergy safety signs to be displayed across the province will feature artwork from a Cree artist.
Jade Roberts designed the signs, which have a dual purpose – to communicate natural gas safety tips while also displaying traditional Indigenous artwork.
Roberts is a member of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band and currently resides on Treaty 6 territory in Saskatoon.
She says SaskEnergy gave her free rein to design the billboards as she wanted.
“They really wanted to give me the reins and create what I was envisioning,” she said. “The artwork is tied to my style.
The billboards will be placed on 52 First Nations around the province that have natural gas services.
“I feel a lot of pride,” said Roberts. “I hope that other Indigenous artist who are seeing my work on resrvecan be inspired by that. It is Indigenous artwork in Indigenous communities.”
