FNUC Students Worried About Education Grants

A student at the First Nations University of Canada is concerned Indian Affairs may be considering drastic changes to the Post Secondary Student Support Program.
Students’ association spokesman Thomas Roussin says he’s worried INAC may want to turn control for the program over to the Canada Student Loans Program.
Under the current terms of the program, Indian Affairs provides money to bands each year for students who want to go to university or trade school.
The program is often criticized by Aboriginal leaders for falling well short of what’s required to address the high number of students who need money for their classes.
However, Roussin says he’s worried the program may shift from a grant program to a loan program altogether.
No one from Indian Affairs was immediately available for comment.
