The community of Fon du Lac Denesuline First Nation is kicking off the 125th anniversary of Treaty 8 with a three-day celebration.

This three-day event will have something for everyone to enjoy.

Day one started with the welcome of the canoe voyager arrival, blessing of the water by elder Agatha Mercredi, followed by an opening prayer and drumming. Then the community did a walk to the baseball field with drumming. Opening ceremonies and opening remarks were made by community leaders and special dignitaries to commemorate this milestone year.

This year they did an honouring of the past chiefs from 1899, special needs children, youth, and adults, and residential school survivors. There will be King and Queen trapper events, jigging, waltz, and two-step dancing, with entertainment by Leonard Adam and the boys.

Day two will start  the day off with a BBQ at the lake. There will be many activities for the children and youth, followed by a traditional feast at the baseball field.  Later on in the day, a talent show and a glow DJ dance will be held at the band hall.

Day three will see the grand opening of the community’s own Northlands College and followed up with a community lunch. There will be activities for adults throughout the day and followed up a traditional feast for supper. The day will wrap up with live entertainment by local entertainment including Leonard Adam and the Boys at the baseball field.
