Youth from James Smith Cree Nation and Lac La Ronge Indian Band made it to Prince Albert this evening to clear a safe path for athletes competing in this year’s Tony Cote Summer Games.
“Even though the weather wasn’t the greatest today, it was a really good day. All the runners at the end of the run felt strong, and they were proud of what they’ve done today. We’re going to put on another 75 kilometers tomorrow, and who knows what the weather will be like, but we’re going to go,” said Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Vice Chief, Craig McCallum.
MBC spoke with the youth once they arrived in Prince Albert, and they were all thankful to be part of the experience and ready to continue with their heads held high.
“There’s ups and downs, like being sore, but meeting new people—I really like it, and I’m excited to do it,” stated 14-year-old lance runner Danica Roberts from LLRIB.
“I’m so happy to be a part of this, and I’m so happy to meet all these girls and guys too, just making a family. We’re a family; that’s the type of feeling we’re getting,” said Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Youth Chief Semiah Cote.
There were concerns from First Nations about air-quality conditions in the La Ronge area for the Summer Games, but LLRIB posted a statement today saying they are going ahead with plans.
In consultation with the Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority and the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, LLRIB stated that smoke in the area will be within “seasonal normal” limits over the next 72 hours, and the current smoke advisory in northern First Nations is precautionary in nature.
“We’re going ahead with plans, so we’re very excited, and the momentum is building as the lance is getting closer to La Ronge and even coming into Prince Albert. I’m glad that I was able to run with the youth a little bit through the city; they’re moving at a really good pace,” explained LLRIB Chief Tammy Cook-Searson.
The lance runners began their journey on Monday and are set to arrive in La Ronge on Sunday for the Tony Cote Summer Games opening ceremonies.
