The Loon Lake RCMP continued to investigate the September 2024 fire that destroyed a church in Loon Lake.
The fire was determined to be suspicious in nature.
On December 7, 2024, Loon Lake RCMP arrested a male in relation to the investigation.
25-year-old Shandon Chief from Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation is charged with one count, arson, Section 434, Criminal Code.
He was also arrested for breaching a conditional sentence order.
He appeared in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on December 9, 2024.
Loon Lake RCMP investigating structure fire

On the morning of September 28, 2024, Loon Lake RCMP responded to reports of a fire at a church on Main Street in Loon Lake.
When officers arrived, the structure was fully engulfed and Loon Lake Fire Services were on scene, attempting to contain the fire.
No one was in the church at the time and no injuries have been reported to police.
This investigation – which includes the circumstances surrounding how the fire started – is in its preliminary stages.
Loon Lake RCMP is asking anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area of the church on the morning of September 28, or who has information about the fire, to report it to police by calling 310-RCMP. Residents in the area of the church are also asked to check their security camera footage and contact police if they note anything out of the ordinary.
